Eastbourne, East Sussex: Officially, the sunniest place in Great Britain(!) and home to nearly 100,000. Primarily a holiday seaside resort, Eastbourne's main income is derived from tourism.

Discover Eastbourne provides information for both tourists and residents, an accommodation guide featuring hotels, guest houses, Bed and Breakfast B&B's, a good food and restaurant guide listing places to eat and drink (with reviews), local events and attractions, train times, weather updates, image galleries, a history of the town and more.

Eastbourne's HISTORY:
Due to the lack of a Cathedral, Eastbourne is classified as a large town, and not a city. Eastbourne is situated within the borough of East Sussex, on the south coast of England, at the eastern end of the South Downs and the famous Beachy Head cliff, which (incidentally) is the suicide capital of Europe.

Both Beachy Head and the South Downs shelter the town, and are responsible for Eastbourne's title of the Sunniest place in Great Britain.

Human activity can be dated back to the stone age, but the area itself remained a cluster of small settlements right up until the 1800's. The town itself started to expand with the arrival of the railway in 1849, whereupon Eastbourne matured into a prime Edwardian seaside resort.

Eastbourne's facilities include two cinemas, four theatres, numerous parks, a bandstand, pier and several museums. Guest Houses and Victorian Hotels line the four miles of shingle beach, which is the focal point of the tourist trade.
